To The Struggling Church

I wrote the following as if I were speaking on behalf of the Father, directly to a struggling and dying church. My hope is that it will bless you.

You are loved, even in your weakened state. You are precious to the Father. As a congregation—as a people—your fight is over. The time of your departure is near. Rest in this final season of your shared life. You are no longer required to strive and labor as a congregation.

Your individual gifts and talents, your individual prayers, and your individual resources are needed elsewhere. It hurts to acknowledge that what once was will soon be no more. It hurts to know that a place where so much time, effort, love, and sacrifice were invested will no longer open its doors regularly to you. The pain is real. The pain is godly. The pain is unavoidable.

And yet, the time to move forward has come.

You have fought a good fight, and you have not given up. You have waited to hear the words “Well done,” and those words are being spoken to you now. We often imagine that “well done” is spoken only over something thriving—lush, growing, and visibly fruitful. But “well done” is also spoken over empty pews and closed doors. Receive this well done, and move on.

Remember the good times. Remember the lives touched, the prayers answered, and the community built. These are your legacies. These are your achievements. These are your reasons to be grateful and proud.

The twilight years of life do not carry the same energy as the prime years. Neither do the twilight years of a church. There are seasons, and the final winter season is upon you. There will be a spring—but it will rise from bare ground, not from what you have built in the past.

As you release what you have labored over and loved, it becomes a seed. A seed must die so that something new can spring forth. It may rise nearby, or it may rise a thousand miles away. The seed rests in the Master’s hand, and He will plant it where He desires. Give Him your seeds.

Rejoice in finishing this race. Other races are being run, and other teams are laboring to bring the gospel into the world. Join another team. Serve another team. Pray with another team. Help another team succeed.

This church was never yours; it was the Lord’s. He placed it into your care for a season. You have not let Him down. But He is moving on. The pillar of fire moved, and when it did, Israel moved with it. Follow where He leads, with the confidence that the time has come.

Proper endings—grief-filled endings—are just as holy and God-honoring as beginnings or seasons of abundance.

For everything there is a season,
a time for every activity under heaven…

Ecclesiastes 3:1–4 (NLT)

When the season changes, embrace the change. When the season changes, seek the Lord for His purposes in the new season. The time to die, the time to tear down, and the time to grieve are now upon you. This season, though unwanted, is ordained by the Father.

He is smiling upon you—and upon this season. He sees the beginning and the ending. He sees what comes next, and He invites you into it. Remember: He is with you in this transition, guiding your steps and comforting your hearts.

Closing Churches Well exists to help congregations, pastors, and leaders navigate the final season of ministry with faithfulness, clarity, and compassion. Think of it as Hospice Care for a local church. We believe a church’s closing chapter should honor its history, care deeply for its people, and steward its resources in ways that reflect the gospel.
