Church Members

When was the last time we had a full service?

What happened to that family that visited a couple of times?

I wonder how much longer they will keep us open?

Where will my funeral be held if this church closes?

I’ve invested decades of time, effort, and financial resources into this place. Was it all for nothing?

If questions like these come to mind as you think about your church, you are not alone.

With thousands of local churches in decline and more than 4,000 churches closing each year in the United States, what happens next has become a deeply personal and increasingly common question for faithful church members.

This section of Closing Churches Well is written for you—the member of a declining congregation who is wondering what comes next. Our hope is that these articles and reflections will help you name what you are feeling, stimulate thoughtful prayer and conversation, and open the door to honest dialogue with fellow members and church leaders.

If we can be of help, we would be honored to walk with you. You may email us with your questions or schedule a complimentary consultation. Click on the contact us button above.

They Didn’t Close So Much As They Simply Stopped

I recently heard about another church that closed just a couple of weeks ago. One Sunday, they simply decided they were done. They closed the doors.

They expected grief. What they experienced was gratitude, peace, and a sense of completion.

Certainly, there was grief, but the congregation had fulfilled the mission passed down by those who founded the church decades earlier. Their final act of faithfulness was not prolonging the ministry, but bringing it to a faithful close. And it was a glorious ending.

To The Struggling Church

You are loved even in your weakened state. You are precious to the Father. As a group, as a congregation, your fight is over; the time of your departure is near. Rest in this final season of your corporate life. You are no longer required to fight and labor as a congregation.

Churches Have a Lifecycle

Humanity has worked hard to enhance, extend, and enjoy life, but everyone knows death is inevitable. People tend not to think of churches this way, but they should. When people understand how something works, it reduces fear, promotes interaction, and enables greater enjoyment.

Closing Churches Well exists to help congregations, pastors, and leaders navigate the final season of ministry with faithfulness, clarity, and compassion. Think of it as Hospice Care for a local church. We believe a church’s closing chapter should honor its history, care deeply for its people, and steward its resources in ways that reflect the gospel.
